Revitalising the Pioneer River waterfront area

Riverside Revitalisation Project

Stage 1 of the Riverside Revitalisation project is now complete! The newly named River Wharves is located in the prime Riverfront location between Paxtons and the Mackay Fish Market.  The finished project can now be enjoyed by the community by taking a seat under the Pavillion of picnic shelters to appreciate the blue river views, walk, ride or run on the asphalt shared path, or participate/hold an event in the space to bring the stage to life.

Works have also begun on the next two stages of this project; the refurbishment of 8 River Street and the construction of the Pioneer River Floating Pontoon.

Woollam Constructions was awarded the tender for the design and refurbishment of 8 River Street (formerly Maria’s Donkey and more recently the Don Daniels restaurant site).

SMC Marine Pty Ltd was awarded the tender for the construction of the Pioneer River Floating Pontoon at Bluewater Quay.

Both projects are expected to be completed by late January 2024, weather permitting.

The Riverside Revitalisation project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Mackay Regional Council. The intent of the Riverside Revitalisation Project is to provide an activated space that inspires the rediscovery of the Pioneer River edge as a quirky, distinctly Mackay destination.  The project will further add to Mackay’s tourism offering and support liveability.
